Pattern Play
Contemporary Pedagogical Pattern Design Development for an Elementary School in L.A.
Pattern is defined as a reliable sample of traits, acts, tendencies, or other observable characteristics of a person, group, or institution. It can also be described of as an established mode of behavior or cluster of mental attitudes, beliefs, and values that are held in common by members of a group. Pattern Play derives its meaning and form from these modes to encourage pedagogical strategies of pattern development through enmeshment in visual spatial networks.
The strategy for this Los Angeles based school is rooted in the way a patterned framework can grow into a system of integrated textures and geometries. Pattern finds form on interior and exterior surfaces, generating a vibrancy and complexity conducive to the development of original thinking. The flourish-table exists as the base module for the design of a stimulating learning environment that nurtures the minds and bodies of today’s youth. Patterning bends spatial constructs creating an environment full of imagination and wonder. The geometries and patterns of the flourish table then form a continuum as it becomes a natural scaffolding through which a synthesized classroom framework and landscape emerge. The base module structure and patterning is multiplied and varied in color, scale, and orientation across the site grounds generating a familiar rhythm within the vibrant pattern network. Pattern Play is designed to facilitate optimal transfer of learning among students by integrating nature’s innate networking mechanism into the learning environment.
A slicing stratagem applied to the site mimics the striated surfaces that compose the landscape itself creating a dynamic potentially mechanized topography which can adapt to pedagogical needs ideal for patterned play. Complex patterning works in tandem with simpler, yet vibrant striated surfaces to strike the balance of work and play in this fluid framework for L.A.’s youth.
The hierarchy of pattern distinguishes programmatic functions of buildings, where denser patterning provides more stimulating atmospheres of learning and development. The classrooms across the site vary from indoor to outdoor, encouraging an optimized engagement with the natural environment. The colorful creativity at the heart of Los Angeles culture is channeled throughout this architectural project to synchronize the children of L.A. with the pioneering pulse of the city at large.
